Description
- Health as a way of life
- The prevention of ill-health
- Community care for all
These are the overlapping themes of the strategy "Health for All by the Year 2000" recently adopted by the World Health Organization, and they form the basis of a "manifesto for health" within the European Region.
As Europe enters the final decades of the 20th century, we are warned that there could be a crisis in the maintenance of health and the delivery of health care unless radical steps are taken by the public, the profession, industry and the governments of the Region to avoid it. This book spells out the background to the present problems and the measures necessary to avoid such a crisis. Commissioned by WHO itself, it argues that health should now be a political and social issue of the first order. Tracing the patterns of ill-health that have emerged during this century, it examines the ways in which public participation, proper training and organization of the health care team, international cooperation and coherent legislation can achieve a more healthy society.
