Abstract
In 1947 three young men at Harvard founded an institution that was and still is unique. The Marshall Plan, the great American effort to restore the European economy, was just getting underway, and some enthusiasts described the "Salzburg Seminar in American Civilization" as an "intellectual Marshall Plan."
In the years since then, the Seminar has welcomed over 12,000 Fellows from 58 countries around the world. The teaching of various aspects of "American civilization" has been largely supplanted by courses focusing on common problems and global issues. Faculty members- who always serve without stipend- have included seven justices of the U.S. Supreme Court, twelve university presidents, three Nobel laureates. Prime ministers of four different countries are on the alumni roster.
This is the story of the Salzburg Seminar's audacious beginnings, of its struggle to survive and grow, and of its extraordinary influence on the lives of the men and women who have come to learn at Schloss Leopoldskron.
