Abstract
The biological aspects of human reproduction and the new developments and problems of this important area of human life are clearly set forth in this comprehensive introductory text. Chapter by chapter, the book follows the human life cycle, from gamete formation through conception to embryonic development and birth, and from childhood to maturity, when gametes are again formed. Professor Swanson applies biological fact and theory to personal and social problems related to reproduction, and gives special emphasis to problems inherent in new reproductive technologies.
Directed to the non-biologist, the study assumes only a background equivalent to a high school biology course, but, in light of the increasing powers to control one's personal life, those theories and specific depth. that can contribute to wise choice are treated in considerable depth. Increased knowledge of such subjects as contraception, physiology of sexual intercourse, genetic counselling, and agents causing birth defects will give a sound basis for making personal choices. Informed discussion of public policy must draw on knowledge about the population explosion, venereal disease, sex education, and abortion. The discussion of these specific issues is woven into the text's chronological account of human life cycle.
A timetable for the development of revolutionary technical innovations in the area of human reproduction is given-innovations that will give us increasing power to control more and more the human reproductive process. The author discusses both the benefits and the perils for each of the expected new techniques.
This book is copiously illustrated with an original set of drawings and a collection of outstanding photographs which give visual emphasis to critical points of discussion.
