Abstract
Investing in women's health and nutrition could save millions of women in developing countries from needless suffering or premature death. Many health interventions directed specifically at women are among the most cost-effective health care measures available today, with ripple effects that benefit children and increase household productivity as well. By addressing key health problems affecting women at all stages of their lives, governments can improve human welfare and national economic efficiency.
Because women's health problems often begin in childhood and adolescence, special efforts are needed to reach women at the earliest possible stage. Interventions during adolescence, in particular, can help break the cycle of poverty, unwanted pregnancy, and limited educational and economic opportunity. Efforts to enhance women's low social status and discourage gender-based discrimination are also vital because of the damaging effects these factors have on women's health.
This report surveys women's health problems from infancy through old age. It then recommends a package of essential clinical and public health services chosen for their impact on female disability and death, their affordability, and their feasibility in developing countries. Even in the poorest countries, governments can help establish these essential services for women and ensure access to them by financing health programs for the poor. International assistance agencies can do their part by sharing their expertise and influencing policy and funding priorities.
