Description
The early Baroque Church of the Virgin Mary the Victorious in Mala Strana (the Little Quarter) encloses in its walls a number of outstanding works of art. The most valuable one is a small wax figure sculpture of the Prague Holy Infant presented to the Carmelites settled here by Polyxena of Lobkowics in 1628. The sculpture is of Spanish origin and Polyxena had received it from her mother Maria Manrique de Lara who had come to Bohemia from Spain. The fame of the Holy Infant has long gone beyond the borders of Bohemia. The Little Praguer is being paid homage by pilgrims from South America, Spain, Germany, but also from Vietnam and China, as can be proved by number of gifts kept within the treasure in the Church. This books tries to clarify a complicated history of the Prague Holy Infant as seen againts the background of the history of the church and of the whole country. Czech-Spanish relations in the 16th - 18th centuries are treated extensively. The publication can also serve as a guide to the church.
