Reduction of morbidito and mortality in children less than 5 years of age is the United Nations' fourth Millennium Development Goal (MDG 4) of eight goals outlined by heads of UN member states to address the needs of the world's poorest nations, to be achieved by yeay 2015. Malnutrition accounts for a significantly large proportion of under 5 mortality and morbidity, this promping an intersubspecialty forum to discuss nutrition strategies that will help meet MDG 4.
In the first chapter of this booklet, trends in child nutrition in the country and in the region, as well as their implications on the attainment of MDG 4, are evaluated and discussed. In the succeeding chapters, various nutritional issues and strategies that may effect morbidity and mortality in various stages of childhod and explored. These include the role of maternal nutrition on the prevention of intrauterine growth retadation, the relationship between breastfeeding and child morbidity and mortality, and the provision of adequate macro- and micronutrients during complementary feeding. Two chapters tackled the role of nutrition in the prevention and treatment of disease. Finally, the status of Philippine pediatric health is assessed in relation to MDG 4. Overall, the contents of this book give a current view of where the country is with respect to MDG 4, and what Philippine health care providers can do to attain it.
